How To Choose An Urn?

By sydney coffins admin

22/02/2017

When it comes to choosing an urn it can be quite distressing and overwhelming. Follow the below guide to make this task a little easier. Sydney Coffins have a wide range of urns that are appropriate for all places.

What style are you after?

Urns are available in different, materials, shapes, sizes and styles to suit all cultures, religions, and other factors which influence a personal decision. Urns come in different themes to suit religions and cultures.

Determine the urn size

The weight of the person determines the required size you should buy. Generally, the weight of the cremated remains of a man is 3.5kg and 2.5kg for women which are approximately the size of a large vase. If you have decided to place the urn in a memorial within a cemetery or columbarium. You will need to check the type and size of urn they allow.

Choose a suitable material

Depending on the final disposition of the ashes the material should withstand the elements. Below is a recommendation of the suitable materials in different environments. For example, a wooden urn will not be durable in an outdoor setting.

Keep in mind that oxidisation and discolourationares often expected with any metal in both indoor and outdoor settings.

Burial within a grave

A strong material is required in this setting to withstand the physical pressures and stress to the urn. Some cemeteries require an urn burial vault. See our burial vaults.

Recommended – Bronze, brass, cloisonne, stainless steel, cultured stone (material made from composited or resins).

Not recommended – Wood, ceramic

Outdoor – Garden display

Recommended – Bronze, brass, cloisonne, stainless steel, cultured stone, ceramic

Not recommended – Wood

Outdoor-  Columbarium nich

Recommended – Bronze, brass, cloisonne, stainless steel, cultured stone

Not recommended – Wood, ceramic

Indoor – Home

Recommended – If you are planning to display the urn at your home itself, look for attractive yet thoughtful funeral urns. Most materials are suitable for an indoor environment. Bronze, brass, cloisonne, stainless steel, Wood, Cultured stone, ceramic

What is a keepsake or token urn?

Families may choose to keep a portion of the ashes at home and the remainder may be kept in another urn within memorial or scattered. For this reason these urns are designed to be small. This choice is popular for family or friends who live far away but still want a physical token of the departed.

Can l buy an urn outside of the funeral home?

Yes, you can. It is within your choice to buy only the funeral arrangements you want. The funeral home cannot refuse to handle a casket or urn you bought online or elsewhere.
