The words casket and coffin is used interchangeably, however, both depict a container used to hold a deceased person. Despite the fact that they are used for the same purpose there is a design difference between the two.
Design difference between a casket and a coffin?
A casket is a four-sided rectangular box and frequently contains a split-top for viewing purposes. A coffin has six or eight sides and is octagonal in shape. The shape of a coffin is wider at a person’s shoulders. The width of the coffin reduces toward the upper and lower part of the coffin. This is the main design difference between a casket and a coffin.
Caskets and coffins can both be made from wood or metal but they can also be made from cardboard, wood, and MDF. The price of both products depends on the materials, fittings, and workmanship that goes into its creation.
Choosing a casket or a coffin
Personal preferences are the primary factor when choosing between a casket or a coffin. A coffin has a traditional appeal and caskets a more modern appeal. Both can be altered in many ways to incorporate a certain style and design through the use of handles, carvings, and symbols. At the end of the day, it is a personal choice governed by individual factors.
Everybody is the same and no different in death as one leaves this physical world behind. Nobody knows for certain what happens to a soul after death. A cardboard coffin and a mahogany coffin will successfully serve the same practical purpose. It will safely contain a deceased person to be buried and it will never be seen again. For this reason, we often speak with our customers not encouraging them to choose a simple pine box but we always explain to them the reasons why it is perfectly appropriate to do so. The underlying choice of a coffin or a casket is more so for the family and friends, so they can appreciate where their loved one is.
